just a quick question guys. on the bearing locknut, the inner locknut has that little post for the washer to fit over. well somehow, that got broken off, is it ok to use it without that little post, or do i need to get a new one?? thanks in advance.

I don't know whether it would hurt to run it with that post broken off or not, but I know that it's about $10 for a new one at O'Rielly auto parts, so it'd probly be worth it to get one.

Some times the post doesn't get broken off and is pushed back into the nut. Try and use a small punch and drive it out from the rear of the nut. Sometimes this works. Also have used them without the pin, just tighten the outer nut real good

Ford dealership. They are used on all the newer stuff. I'll have to get you the part number......but I THINK they have been discontinued. I tried to order about 8 of them last month......and they were on national back order. They cost about $15 per side. If your dealer can't get them, they ARE available aftermarket. The only modification required is to file down the key that fits in the spindle slot. The late model spindles have wider slots.

id say just buy the new ring. for one, it will be a lot cheaper, and for two, i prefer redundancy holdin my wheels and crap together...

These are the same style nuts used on the rear hubs of all the full floating axles since the late 90's. Rear hubs falling off has not been an issue last I checked.

Also, there is no redundancy in the original style. The two lock nuts rely on each other to stay tight. If the outer nut is not properly torqued, and begins to loosen.....the inner nut will NOT hold. There is no backup. If one fails, so will the other.

The new style nuts are keyed to the spindle. No matter how loose they are, they won't spin off.

update to this post in case anyone is interested.

HillbillyDeluxe81 said to'replace' the old style dual spindle nuts (and washer)
with single ratching nut. here's a link that shows pics and info on this
newer ford models use them. cool.

Jeep Dana 44 Spindle Nut

Cheers
