Anybody know why my new/used speedometer with brand new cable would bounce up and down 5 miles an hour from actual speed?
I was thinking maybe trying to get some graphite down the cable, but being brand new I wouldn't think that it would need it.
I bought the end that hooks into the transfer case too. But I have the some old gear on it, it looked pretty wore out.
Maybe that speedometer head that I got from ebay is shot. I would hate to take that cluster apart again, I'm getting sick of doing it. I guess it's something that I can live with, but it pisses me off, spending all that time, I would really like something that works right.
My o-rings showed up in the mail, so now I have something to do for the rest of the afternoon, thanks.
Sounds to me like you need to change the plastic gears. Mine did that until I changed both of the plastic gears. You said the one that is on the end of the cable is pretty wore. You can bet the one inside the Tcase is toast. Pretty easy to change.
I have been told the way to lube the cable is to pull the wire out of the center, soak a rag in ATF and wipe the cable with it. Are you sure you dont have any tight bends or loops in the cable? It does sound like it's binding.

It works now, all I did was straighten the cable a bit, not very much at all.
What's that plug in on the piece that goes into the transfer case for, cruise control, automatic transmission speed sensor? I noticed that there's a couple of wires hanging around there with no end on them. I think 2 out of 3 are hot. I just taped them up, but if it's part of the cruise system I might look into hooking them up, and eventually get the cruise working.
Yeah, if it's at the transfer case end of the cable it for a factory cruise control. My 85 had an aftermarket setup and the sensor was mounted on the speedometer end of the cable.
