I have a 1985 F350 2wd with T19 4 speed. The speedo had not worked since getting the truck and the other day I pulled the speedo cable at the trans to fix it. I found the gear severely worn and thus replaced it. While I had the cable out of the trans I check that it wasn’t broken by attaching the cordless drill to it. While I ran the drill my wife confirmed that the speedometer was working.
But, now that I have it all hooked up with a new cable gear the speedometer bounces a lot and reads low until the truck reaches about 60 mph. It did not bounce when I ran it with the drill so there must be something in how it is being driven by the trans gear that is causing it to bounce and read low. Any ideas?
When ever mine bounces it generaly means it's binding and will break soon. Try a new cable they are not too expensive. The drill has a lot of power compared to that little gear.
Can't answer about the lube job, but I know that I had to check the speedo cable at both ends to find my bouncing problem. The speedo cable had pulled partially out of the speedo. Also if you have cruise, check all four ends, as the speedo goes through the speed sensor diaphragm before reaching the tranny or speedo.
If it works while you're spinning the speedo cable with a drill, you've got something else at the tranny end wrong, and the cable doesn't need a greasing, as it works just fine for your test. If it was binding it would have snapped with a drill spinning it.
Lubing cable is relatively simple but a pain in the butt...take a small ziplock back, pop a hole in the lower corner, slip top end of cable thru hole and wrap a rubber band around it several times to seal the bag to the cable, pour a small amount of lube (gear oil should work or a thick oil and let it drain down thru the cable....used to do that of motorcycle brake cables all the time...work slick as $#@%..Good luck
