Putty for a Firewall Grommet

Hello All,

I need to find a replacement for the grommet for the main firewall hole on the drivers side. When the plow company installed my plow, they didn't punch/drill a hole through the large grommet. They just pulled the grommet out and ran the wiring. It is a very difficult area to reach so I can't put in a replacement grommet. Plus, I have gauge wiring, plow wiring, etc. currently going through the hole. I am currently using adhesive sound deadning material used in audio installs but I have not been able to completely cover the hole under the hood. So now I am turning my attention to sealing the hole from the inside with some sort of removable filler. I was thinking of using a putty and found some butyl rubber string caulk that is used as windshield caulk but I am afraid it will/could melt into a mess. I tried a ball of duct tape and that worked but eventually fell out of the hole.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I could use? Please bear in mind that whatever solution would have to removable to access the wiring.

Thanks...

Neil

Why not just plain ol' silicone caulk? It won't melt or dry out, and if it does, you have bigger issues. LOL

Duct Seal/Thumb Gum

Will Duct Seal/Thumb Gum melt, become stringy or gooey or make any other kind of mess?

Is this the same stuff HVAC guys put around the hole in your wall where your line set (copper lines) run from your coil to the condensor and compressor?

Thanks..

I don't know what Thumb Gum is, but I use a 3M product called Window Weld Ribbon sealer.
It is petroleum based, (brake clean, gasoline, diesel, will melt it if it get's submerged in it.
But that stuff sticks like nobody's business and works very well for what you are trying to do.
It's basically road tar in a rope.

Neil - No the Bramec thumb gum won,t melt or get stringy @ temps in the engine bay area - I would'nt use it right next to the manifold . Matter of fact that is what I used around my wiring going thru the firewall, been there for about 3 years, stays pliable, is easy to pull off if u need to add more wires in the future, but I do still have the factory plug in there. This is the grey stuff that some guys use around linesets. Don't use the black (permatex) sealant, as it doesnt hold up very well. It is also sold as Blackburn ductseal. Hope this helps

Putty

Well, I bought a bar of this putty. Looked like C4 packages you see on TV. Stuck some in hole on the engine side of the firewall on top of the sound deadening material. So far, so good.

Thanks everyone for the advice.
