hey guys, got a problem that hopefully some one can help me with. i just changed the steering box and steering pump last week. now it seems like the steering is stiff and my arms are sore from driving. the truck has to roll in order to turn, i cant turn the wheel standing still. its driving me nuts. i changed the pump because of the whinning. it has 35/15 tires on it, but it should still be able to turn easy, shouldnt it ?
ok after reading A LOT on here. im thinking the problem is that i put power steering fluid into it and not ATF fluid. can any one tell me if thats what im suppost to use. i dont have a manuel.
You are to use ATF. Drain it. Flush it again, and refill. Jack up the front of the truck, put it on jackstands and turn you wheels lock to lock for a couple of minutes to help bleed the air out of it. Hope no damages to the seals is done. Good luck. Use Merc V.
Agree with the guys, get that powersteering fluid out of there. Beings you spend all that money, top it off by using Mobil 1 synthetic tranny fluid, its expensive about 9 dollars a quart but well worth it IMO, thats what I flushed my old with, get two or three quarts to be safe.
The guys have you on the right track, However with larger than stock tires you will have a tough time turning the wheel while the truck is stationary. The contact patch of a wide tire is significantly larger than the stock tires.
Same deal on my truck even with a Red head steering box.
ok flushed the system and same deal. will not turn at a stop. so i removed power steering pump and got a new one. after bleeding for like 30 minutes i gave it another shot. dropped it off the stands and took it for a spin. same deal but a little easier at a stop. hey waltdog, i know what your saying but the origanel one that i took out because of the whinning turned with one finger even with the 39 1/2 super swampers that i had on it when i got it. so on pump #2 could there be an airlock in it or what. im getting frustrated with it.
My guess is the steering box is a little stiff and needs to get worn in. I just replace the steering box on my 68 Buick GS. I was able to turn the wheel with my little finger, now I have to really try to turn it. One thing to try is to rev the engine a little while trying to turn the tires to see if that helps. On my buddy's old dodge cummins you can't turn the wheel unless you give it a little throttle.
Wow phat I replaced my oil ps fluid with mobil 1 synthetic and my braking and steering effort was cut in half, Maybe like greg said it hopefully just needs a little breakin time?
Maybe your new pump has its pressure relief valve set at a lower pressure than your original, allowing lower hydraulic pressure, thus less "work" done. Would it surprise you that rebuilders would do that to keep their pumps running for the warranty period?
Without elaborate test hoses and gauges, you'll never know.
Watch it when "burping" it (turning it lock-to-lock repetitively), as you can cause the steering dampener to leak internal fluid past it's seals if you go too fast.
