you can ohm the plugs at the connector to check the glow plugs. I will see if I can dig up the post about checking the gp circuit. Mark has a good explanation on this.
ok check ficm voltage theres a number of post on this subject.
check the batteries, when doing so its important to isolate the grounds to each one
to test the glowplugs disconnect the buss bar and ohm from the componet side of the bar one pin at at time (4pins each side total) to ground, should be about an ohm. do not use a test light you wound get accurate readings.
Whats wierd is even when it was 10 degrees outside the glow plug lite only stayed on for 3-4 seconds. As long as I cycled it several times..
no problem.
My Dad had the same problem with a 7.3 a few years back and he replaced a "relay". Whatever that means. He said the dealer
did it so he can't help me find the issue.
I would think the lite should stay on longer in colder weather??
Cycling the key does nothing for the glow plugs - they are on for 2 minutes (no need for cycling the key). The plugs staying on and the light are not connected. Now the injectors may benefit from it. I would say check your batteries (load test individually), then check your FICM.
edit -
Darn it - just read Cheezit's post. Oh well ...... what he said!!!
I had a similar issue...I never cycled the key that many times but in my 03 if I tried to start it cold (without plugging it in) it ran like it was firing on half the cylinders...until it warmed up.
My mechanic (he's a certified Ford diesel tech) updated the flash on it...and I no longer have that issue.
BTW, I got your WV membership request...but I need some info from you. What's the best way to contact you? Once you get a few more posts under your belt, you could use the PM feature!
I've seen this problem with the F-650's with 6.0L in them. I work at an International dealer, so we can reprogram the 650s and 750s. The reprogram seems to take care of it.
