Upfitter switch help

ok, before you give me links to the Heated Mirror switch mod or the High idle mod, I have searched and found those threads. They have great info, but not quite enough to answer my questions...

All of the write ups have me connecting to ONE wire for the upfitter switch use. Correct me if I am wrong, but I need another to complete the circuits...

Ok, so I located the upfitter wire bundle and the Green/Violet stripe wire for the heated mirrors. If I cut the Green/Violet wire and connect one end to the Orange/Lt. Green upfitter #1 wire, am I to connect the other end to a ground to complete the circuit with the Upfitter switch? or is there another wire that isnt mentioned in the manual or these write ups?

Thanks,

- Rich

The heated mirror element is grounded already (complements of Ford) if your mirrors are equipped for heat and your connecting up using the original connectors...you then only need to provide power from your upfitter switch relay with the one wire.

There's only one wire for the upfitter....am I completely missing something here? my basic electronics class from 25 years ago in High School tells me its impossible to complete the cirsuit with only one wire to a switch....

I have the Green/Violet wire for the Heated Mirrors...I cut it and now have two ends.

I have the end of the Orange/Lt. Green single end to the upfitter....

The math isnt working for me. I am adept at doing auto electronics, but the guidance provided seems lacking for me...

Help!

In short...the heated mirror is already grounded. Is the upfitter switch grounded as well? and all I need to do is connect the unused Green/Violet wire to ground?

Sorry for all the replies...this is what happens when I am sitting with my laptop and nothing else....I keep thinking about it without walking away and giving someone a chance to answer....

After cutting the Green/Violet wire you will have one wire that has 12V on it with the key in the on position and the other with no voltage on it with the key in the On position. You will not be using the wire with the 12V on it, (tape it off so it cannot short). Connect the Upfitter wire to the Green/Violet wire that had no voltage on it...the upfitter switch will now provide the 12V to the heater element when the switch is in the on position. The electrical circuit is completed because the mirror is grounded already to the battery.

Thanks jjcomputer, that cleared up a ton. One more question and I will be on my way to make this happen.

After I cut the wire, I dont have a multi-meter, will the side of the Green/Violet that leads back to the fuse box be hot? or the side that leads back into the wire bundle and, I assume, back to the mirror?

Thank you,

-Rich

Yes...with the key in the on position.
