I have a 77 F-250 with D60 with an open diff. The truck is going to be used as a driver and to pull the boat to the lake when the resto is complete. Now the old lady will be backing the boat in since she cant drive the boat to save her life so I would like to lock the rear up incase she gets it too far into the water. I know you could use the 4x4 but she is a woman and I dont have the patience to explain it lol. So I was looking at a locker like:
I would go with the Powr-Lok. Those things are tight enough that you'd never slip it on a boat ramp. Keep in mind your rear axle is only a 30 spline. For that reason....I'd never put a Detroit locker in one used for towing. Whenever you are accelerating from a stop while turning......such as pulling out onto the highway......your entire rig is being pulled by the inside axle shaft ONLY. The outside wheel is simple free-wheeling. That's WAY too much stress on that little bitty shaft.
A Powr-Lok will STILL apply more torque to the inside wheel. However, the Powr-Lok will slip before the axle goes pop. There is no slip with the Detroit.
detroit locker is probably the most popular. works like a posi, except it physically locks the wheels, doesnt mess around with clutches or anything, so it's way more durable and heavy duty. i have one in my 77, love it. i dont know much about other lockers.
I do know that some dana 60 rears have 16 spline shafts, some have 30 spline shafts, cant remember which went into which models or years. my 77 had 30 spline shafts though. might want to pull a shaft to check, just to be sure before you buy anything.
so since I will be pulling with it on road situations the power lock would be the better option? The aussie locker will probably be going in the front so if it ever got real nasty I'm sure it could crawl its way out
Once again, Detroit only applies torque to one axleshaft in a turn. Not a good idea when you have an axleshaft weaker than a 4 cylinder ranger shaft. For street or off-road use, it would be fine because the tire will usually slip first. However, with a heavy load and a heavy foot, the axle shaft may go 'pop' before the tire spins. There is no way I'd ever tow with a Detroit and 30 spline Dana 60.
To put things in perspective, I tow a gross combined of about 15,000 in my 05 F-150 on a regular basis. I would be concerned with putting a Detroit in it......and it has more beef in the axle than a Dana 70. Whenever I'm pulling out on the highway from a stop, I just don't like all that torque going to just one shaft. Maybe I'm just too paranoid.

Yeah, as long as you're not actually backing down into a creek, the Powr-Lok would be a much better choice. I have one going in my Dana 70 HD.

The Detroit is nothing like a "posi". Positraction is a GM / Eaton trademark for a limited slip differential. You're correct about the Detroit being very durable and heavy duty. However, the axle shafts are not...... Seriously, they are weaker than a 28 spline Ford 7.5 shaft.
