Got mine from US Radiator for my 51 Ford with 351W and auto. They look like orignal but they make them for what ever engine you have. Also you can have trans cooler built in no extra charge when I got mine. Fit and looked just like orignal.

After the deal fell through on the truck radiator I decided to go with a 68-70 Mustang three row radiator for a 390 engine. I'm picking it up at NAPA later this week. The price was right at $194 and it's an easy radiator to find most anywhere. It's a little shorter and a little narrower than the truck radiator and should be a bit easier to install. I'll get back here after I have it in my hands with exact measurements for anyone who might be interested. I'm sure the 73-77 F-150 radiator would also have worked and thanks to Tim for the pictures...

Would you like pictures of a '70 mustang rad sitting in the 48? I happen to have on of those too - from my son's project car.

My wife thinks I should get rid of some stuff.... nah!

I surely would. You know my E-mail address! The 68-70 should all be the same...maybe even 67-70 for the big block engine. Mine has to be for the big block (390, 427, 428) since the small blocks (289, 302, 351) of those years had the bottom inlet on the passenger side and I need the bottom inlet on the driver's side...

I'll look and see what it is. I think it may have been a 351 car originally. I'll shoot you a picture if I'm wrong. I know when we bought the car it had a 302 in it but hacked up so bad i know it wasn't stock.

Bronco Radiator

I installed a 79 Bronco radiator in my 48 F1. Pictures of the radiator in my gallery. I built the radiator mounts so that it would work with my stock fenders.

Thanks, but what you have done is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. I don't mind fabricating the brackets to install the radiator into the stock radiator support but I do not want to build a new support just to make a Bronco or some other radiator fit. I appreciate the work you did and you did a great job but I think there is a simpler way to go and that's what I'm after. The Mustang radiator should fit right into the stock radiator support with little modification...

I picked up my new radiator from NAPA this morning. The 68 Mustang 3-row for a 390 is about 22 inches tall including the top tank, the bottom hose inlet (1 3/4 diameter) is on the driver's side, and the top outlet (1 1/2 inch diameter) is on the passenger side which is what I need for my 85 Ford 302. The entire width inchuding the brackets is 25 3/8 inches. Since the distance between the original radiator mounting bolts is 24 inches and the total width of the radiator support is over 25 inches it should be just a matter of drilling new holes for mounting. I'll try to take pictures of the mounting when I get around to it and post them here.

Thanks to all who helped me determine which radiator I needed...

Well the 68 Mustang radiator didn't work out after all so I'm still looking for a radiator. The biggest problem was that the lower inlet was positioned toward the center of the bottom tank instead of the far left as you would expect. I had to mount it higher in the radiator support due to the width and that brought the inlet above the bottom of the power steering pump making lower hose mounting impossible. I'll need something narrower and with the bottom left inlet further to the left...

Vern, check out Bobby's gallery or PM him. I think he used a '70(?) Dodge radiator on his '49.

Gil,

Thanks, but the Dodge won't work on my 49. I need a left (driver's side) lower inlet and the Dodge radiator has the bottom right.

I used a 72 Nova radiator on my 48 F1. The bottom inlet was on the opposite side. I got 2 90 degree elbows an used a piece of aluminum pipe between them. Can't even see the pipe down under unless you know it is there. Need a picture I could send one. Larry.

After reviewing the radiator situation again this morning I've come to the conclusion that I may have the engine mounted too low. Regardless of what radiator I use it appears that I am going to have a clearance problem with the PS pump and fan clearing the lower hose. I see another topic coming called how high is your 302 mounted...or something like that!
