Why? Because it is quiet, I can hear my music at a reasonable volume with out the distortion... And, my ears don't roar for a half hour after I get out......... It is quiet enough it does NOT draw the attention of every cop within a mile, hell I go past them at 10 to 15 over the speed limit "even uphill" and they never notice, unless they are running radar, then 99 times out of 100 they just say hold 'er down a little. I don't see that happening if it is so loud you can't think....
Mine has the factory exhaust, and it will always be quiet as long as I own it..
Thats just me, never had a loud car or truck in 46 years of ownership, I ain't gonna change now!!!
great thread. i never understood the loud exhaust thing, until i bought a 4.9 liter that the PO removed everything back from the cat. it's rather loud and kind of embarrassing at times.
I have a SIDO Magnaflow and really like it. I think it sounds perfect for the truck. If you still have both cats it won't be as loud. Mine only has one cat. Its straight out the back with 3.5x18 inch tips on 2.5 pipe. You can run 2.25 pipes too. It won't really matter. I just wanted it to sound deeper.
I have a 95 4.9L with a magnaflow hi-flow cat and a universal magnaflow 1-in-1-out muffler. it is pretty quiet (quiet enough to pass the German inspection), but it has a deep tone and opens up pretty nice when u gas it. i have a video of it on this thread:
I have the 5.8 in my truck and I am really suprised by how quiet it is. I get some noise from my exhaust leak on the passenger side but other wise cruising around town its really quiet.
I was driving my wife and family to lunch today and had to get across 3 lanes in a short distance to get to our turn which was really close to the ramp we just got off of.
It roared a bit under that really heavy throttle but other wise thats the only time it speaks up.
I will be replacing my manifolds with headers..and puting in a true dual exhaust. I am ok with the added volume as long as its deep and not raspy. I am designing something that will not blow my neighbors windows out when I start it up, yet will be loud to let other drivers know I'm merging on the highway.
I forgot to mention that with my setup, I can hear my radio just fine, and I don't have subs or anything. I just have an older Kenwood deck with Kenwood door and rear speakers. You can barely hear the exhaust inside, but its definitely audible outside.
