When do most places switch back to #2 from the winter blend? When I filled up tonight I checked my mileage like always and it had jumped back up to over 16mpg. Since it got cold it has been lower and I wonder if they have switched?
Over half the people behind the counter will not know what you are talking about.
When the switch happens in your area will depend on you local average temps.
No more nights down below freezing using the averages, and they will be switching.
There are two types of diesel fuel sold at the pumps. Number #2 is the summer blend for warm weather temps. Number #1 is the winter blend diesel fuel that contains additives to keep the fuel from jelling at freezing temps. You supposedly get better mileage with #2? Some do and some don't from what I've heard. Someone will chime in and give some exact reasons!
I get better mileage with #2 fuel. I noticed it start to drop in about late nov last year and figured they had switched to winter blend. We have a marathon station that sells what they call premium select winterized fuel and when I ran it this year I was lucky to get 14mpg. I switched back to the fuel that shell sells and it went back up to about 15.5 for the winter. It is now going back up to 16.5 plus. I figured they had switched back again around here. As for the peopel working at these places they know nothing about what they sell. I asked what thier ctane rating was on the fuel and they looked at me funny. The guy said I must mean octane and that it was on the pump lol.
