need help FAST!!!

ok so i just installed my 08 mirrors and ran all the wires for the POWER fold and telescpoing...well when i go to hook it all up i hit the switches and it folds in, but wont fold back out...i look around at things and see there are "bridge wire" in terminals 2 and 5 connecting the 2 switches...(one switch toggles between fold and telescopining, and the other does the in and out thing) well when i switched the 2 wires from terminals 2 and 5 so that the 2 wires are now on opposite terminals now the mirrors fold back out and extend out but wont go back in...what do i do guys..please help!!!

If that's the way it's supposed to be, it sounds to me like the switch is not reversing poliarity for you. I think you need to barrow a helms manual to see how the wiring changes poliarity.

Would using a double throw switch instead of single throw help? Sorry, I always have a hard time figuring out electrical problems without looking at the stuff myself.

This is the problem we have ran into on the Fold/Telescope mirrors.. Right now the only method I know of to make it work is using a switch identical to the Lariat Pedal switch (the one that brings them in/out).. That switch is built to reverse polarity which is how these mirrors operate. You could attempt to use a double throw switch. It may work, but can't gaurantee that.

Let me do some more digging, I know we are able to operate them fine on the test bench using a booster battery.. I just can't think off the top of my head what we tap'd to make it work.. I'm at the office right now..

I can tell you this. On my truck you pull the switch back to fold them in, then you pull it BACK again to fold them out. The first few time I kept pushing the switch forward. Maybe it'll work with other switches, give it a try.

But I have the factory switch. You might try to get one from Ford.

If I recall from my 08 Test drive.. You pull it back to fold in.. then pull it back again to fold out but you dont have to hold it right? Once it triggers to folds in or out and stops.. If that's the case then I need to find out if the power supply is within the mirror holding the charge.. Problem with us using aftermarket switches will be overloading the relay.. It may be a simple trigger pulse that activates another power source (computer sorta) that folds then out then stops..

This is why I didn't get the fold in/out and telescope mirrors.. They are tough to get right..

Yeah, it's just a quick pull back and them they fold in or out with out having to hold the switch.

Would not suprise me if the function of the mirrors are controlled by the PCM, as FMC did away with alot of the conventional relays on the 08 and integrated the relays function into the PCM. The blinkers and flashers for instance do not use a conventional relay, they are controlled by the PCM and if you make any changes to them (ie adding/removing lights) such as an upfitter would do you need to reprogram the PCM in order for them to work correctly. The upfitters by the software from FMC that lets them reprogram the PCM.

I have not seen the electrical schematics on the 08 SD yet so i am not sure if they are controlling the mirrors through the PCM but you may want to check this out.

I wonder if a switch off of a Navigator or an F150 with power fold mirrors would control these '08 mirrors.

Your not bothering us.. but I did some colaborating with a friend and some thinking.. Electrical engineering classes are sorta paying off..

Basically 1 of 2 things occurs..

The PCM (thanks to Ford) controls pretty much the Fold/Tele controls.. Possibly?

What we do however know is, the switch is nothing but a trigger. A trigger to a circuit that is extending or retracting, folding in or out.. The question however is simple, where's the freakin circuit. Is it in the mirror?

However I do not think it's the PCM tho because on the test bed we were able to make the mirrors fold in and out.. Extend and Retract.. What I would like for you to do.. Apply normal polarity to the mirror.. Ground out and zap it with positive.. It should either extend/fold out or retract/fold in.. When you locate that wire, reverse the polarity and see if it does the opposite.. If that works then it's simple.. Run a Double Throw where one way is positive polarity and the other is negative polarity..
