81 3 speed

Ok, got a F100 3 speed with a 300 I6. What transmission is this, is it fully sycronised and will it pull a heavy load?

The previous owner said he thought it was a 3.03 toploader. After some research, i found that these transmissions were not used after the mid 70's as a factory part. They were designed as a replacement to the BW T10, and were sycronised in all forward gears. They were used in everything from 6's to the 428.

By '81 the 303 toploader 3 speed was the only one available iirc.

All synchro. It was offered earlier in trucks, and '64 for cars, again iirc.

The BW T10 is a 4 speed, and was replaced by the toploader 4 speed. Looks the same, but all different.

Info on both:

ok, if it is a toploader 3 speed, is it a trans or clutch problem that causes it to grind going from 2nd to 1st? (double clutching it helps)

Synchro could be worn and easy to push past. Brand new transmissions will grind if you try to go past the synchro to fast.

Have you checked your clutch linkage and mount? '80s trucks have firewall issues. Flex and cracking happen, with or without rust. This causes your pedal motion to be soaked up without moving the clutch, causing hard shifting and grinding.

3 on the tree, right?

yes three on the tree. And the linkage was replaced as part of the engine rebuild. (i broke the spring, so i replaced the whole linkage), and is set properly.
So is this easy to rebuild, Or should i try to find a replacement?

Probably pretty easy. Mine went into the dumpster when the toploader 4 speed went in.....

would it be hard to cut into the floorpan to put a T18 in? Or what about a C6 or AOD? I just want to get the damnthing back on the road.

No removable floor panel?

Is the trans still in the truck?

A couple of things need to be checked.

--overall length. If the same, easy swap.

--input length. If the same, bolts to your bell, uses your clutch.

--input spline. If the same, uses your clutch disc.

Popping the shifter up into the cab will take some cutting, and fab a boot for it, or get one from a donor truck.

Ford used different depth bell houseings for trucks vs. cars, and I'm not certain they didn't fudge on the three speed. Probably didn't, but if the bell is the right depth, it will make it a lot easier.

Do some checking....

Now AOD or other automatic--you'll need a flex plate, fiddle with the starter, linkages, shifter. Lots more work. AOD would be nice though....
