I'm looking at an '87 parts truck. It has a ZF 5 speed but I couldn't positively identify the engine. Were 7.3's used in '87 or were the 6.9L still in use??
I am told the crank/rod journals are smaller on the 6.9. Is that a big issue?? Am I handicapping myself with a 6.9, as opposed to a 7.3??
The easiest way to tell the difference between the 6.9L and 7.3L IDI's is by looking at the head bolts, the 6.9L motors use a 7/16" 12 point socket, the 7.3L motors use a 1/2" 12 point socket.
There are those that believe the 1987 6.9L is the best motor ...
The fuel filter is what tipped me off that it might be a 6.9. I thought it was a '91 truck and that somebody put the 6.9 style fuel filter assy on it as filters are cheaper. After I found out it was an '87, I was away from the truck and couldn't check anything else.
This is a 2WD dually that I wanted the engine from as a spare. I can't use the ZF 5 as all of my trucks are 4WD. I can use the front clip and doors as spares though.
If I bring this truck home, what is the rear worth (4.10:1), what is the trans worth and if I decide to sell the 6.9 what is that worth??
Odom shows 98K but it might be 198K. The truck has been driven 50-100 miles a year for the last 5 years that I know of.
Looking at bolt on items to determine what you are looking at could bite you ... That is why I recommend looking at the head bolts. Quick, Easy, ACCURATE!
look at the headbolts or look by the injection pump it should be stamped on the driver side on the block right near the injection pump gear cover pretty sure its the block serial it will have the engine size then the rest are #
