How do SR-22 forms work?

Ok so last summer i got an old truck running and the day i was goin to put insurance on it I let my dad take it for a drive and backed into my old teacher. now i have an SR-22 form filed. But after this winter im considering getting rid of my 05 F150 for a super duty with manual hubs and transfer case. But its my understanding that if i dont do it just right i could lose my liscense, and plates and so on. So if I do this how do I go about it with out any trouble?

I just googled SR-22 and there's a lot of info out there. It just seems to be a form that you have to file to show that you will insure a vehicle.

Geico claims that they can work with you, but probably any insurance company can.
