EFI exhaust manifolds are like shorty headers plus they are a stock item, cast iron, bolt on with little or no altering and are inexpensive compared to headers. You will get bragging rights with the headers along with constant loosening, leaks, breakage...a real PITA. JMO
well, the gains would be decent, but not worth the trouble. when you put headers on this engine, it boxes in the starter. everytime u need a new starter yoiu would have to remove the headers.
to tell you the truth, the stock efi manifolds are pretty good. i have also learned that the 300 see good gains with the stock split manifold into true duals.
i have a 1984 f150 300ci w/ a header, elec fan, msd coil, and some more small stuff and i would not buy another header they are a pain (installing and maintaining) I did not notice much of a diffrence other than sound (which is fair) only recommend if used w a 4barrel intake. but they are $$ i am choosing to drop is a sbf instead (so many parts cheap)
Of course, if your engine is already an EFI, headers are the only upgrade you have left with exhaust. However, even on the EFI engine, just putting on a freer flowing exhaust will be quite a gain in itself.
If you have a carb, the EFI manifolds are the way to go. Very big improvement. I noticed awesome gains, even with the stock 1bbl. They're also very "install and forget", unlike everything I've heard about headers.
AB if you have pics of your complete dissasembly and all angles of your IM and EM I could really use them. If you could email them to me that would be even better. I'm debating ripping mine apart and doing the gasket but i can't seem to find any good diagrams anywhere. Besides looks like some good engine **** .
As others have stated I personally would go with the EFI manifolds.
I wish I had taken more, but it was over 100* out, and I had already spent an hour with the EFI manifolds on the bench grinder to make them fit. Didn't require much grinding, but I was using my Dad's hand-me-down grinder that was 20 years old and had like 1/5 HP or something. Push a little too hard, and the wheel would stop spinning. Ugh. Took forever! Wasn't in the mood for pictures after that...
This is a gallery of pics of when I put the 4bbl intake/carb on. There's probably a lot better pics of the exhaust manifold setup in there than there are in the exhaust upgrade pictures.
Thanks AB. Yeah i am lookin at them now. I was hoping for more pics of the stock IM.
I'm also trying to see how you ran your vacuum lines because i eliminated everything that was unnessicary to engine performance because the lines were melted and that stupid temperature vac valve thing just seems ridiculous to me.
