351W Engine Replacement Questions

I am going to be replacing the engine in my 1989 F250, and I have a few questions. I have done several engine replacements before in a shop I worked at. So while these are probably very obvious questions I just want to make sure that I am doing things right, since it is my daily driver.

1) The motor I am installing is a long block coming out of a fresh rebuild. With that being said I am trying to figure out how to get the distributor set-up properly.

2) I am considering removing the A/C unit, and the smog pump since neither one of them work. I would like some advice on belt sizing to use, if I remove these components. I do know that the local parts place has a replacement pulley to install instead of the A/C unit.

Answer to #1: How to properly set the timing on a 302 or 351

Answer to #2: The belt length depends on many factors. There are several different versions of belt routing schemes. If you are eliminating the A/C you will probably need the spacer pulley, but you may be able to get away without the same for the smog pump. Again it depends on the belt routing and what other components make up the accessory drive system. I removed the smog pump on my '92 F350 w/5.8L engine but did not need a smog pump delete pulley. All it took was a shorter belt. I had to use a string to trace out the proposed new belt route, then measured it's length. I went to the parts store armed with that info and ended up with the correct belt.

Hey,

Thank you very much for the link!

I'll take your advice on using a string to get the correct measurement. I am just thinking there's no much point in installing components that will not be used. Besides the wasted energy of turning those pulleys for nothing.

you can also get a replacement pulley for the smog pump, then you could use the stock size belt.
