Hi everybody, I'm sure it has been discussed but i did a quick search and wasn't really satisfied. My motor burns about a quart to every thousand miles it has 235 thousand miles on it and i wasn't really concerned till i read that it might be leaking through my CDR valve, so I investigated and my intake was wet with oil so I ordered a new valve. 70 bucks later i had a new valve and I'm still burning about the same amount of oil, my intake is still wet so I'm assuming it's still coming through. Just looking for some input/ ideas what I can do.
When you say "my intake is wet" are you talking about your air filter or filter housing? When the truck's running, take off your oil fill cap and see if there's oil spraying out or if there's a lot of pressure. Feel it with your hand for pressure. Do the same with the dipstick tube.
2 things. Only check the oil level after the truck is completely up to temperature and then allow it to sit for 5 minutes before checking oil level. ONLY add if it's below half way point or lower. The dipsticks are calibrated for hot oil check so if your checking it cold it will show lower and then you end up over fillng it resulting in the engine burning it.
The other thing is what brand of oil. Alot of guys use Rotella, I use Motorcraft 15w40 diesel oil with great results.
When I said my intake is wet, i ment that it's wet past where the CDR valve comes in. I've been checking it properly, just like you said and I believe I'm running rotella 15w-40 deiesel oil.
A quart per thousand is pretty good actually. It has to do some with the valve design as well, the guides let some oil past them. The CDR can cause some loss, but it is normal to see some wetness on the intake floor.
The oil you see in the intake accumulates over a period of time of the engine running. Its not like liquid oil is comming out of the crank case and pouring down your intake. Its simply mist that condenses on the bottom of the intake. It accumulates up to a certain point, then the amount present in the intake remains steady.
As for the rate of oil consumption, my engine would swallow up to 1 qt per 200 miles if I ran it hard enough. Still ran great and all cylinders blew well over 400 PSI. Its just the nature of these beasts as they age. I suspect most of my oil consumption was from valve stem seals that were completely brittle. The only reason I rebuilt the engine was because of glow plug damage to one of the pistons.
Now that its rebuilt I am spoiled rotten! Since the initial break in, I don't have to add oil between changes.
I noticed that my truck burns a fair amount of oil. I drove somewhere around the 4-500 mile mark and had to add almost a quart, but it had been sitting for 2 years too, im hoping that is most of it and once everything seats again and seals up it will be good.
alright, thanks for your input. I'm not gonna worry about it too much, it has 235k on it and runs like new, couldn't ask for a better motor. I'm sure it will outlast the truck
