Hi, I'm trying to replace the AC accumulator on my 97 V6 3.0 Ranger. I'm having trouble with the so-called quick disconnect fitting. I have the quick disconnect tool and when I slide it on the line and push it toward the connection, I can see and feel it depressing the circular spring, but the connection doesn't budge. I'm not feeling smarter than the tool on this one, so I appreciate any help on this!

Uhm, just checking here before I answer your questions, but do you have all the AC tools you need? If you do not have the tools, and are not familiar with working on AC systems, you should leave this to a pro.
The fittings still have o-rings in there, and over time they can stick tight. Once the disconnect tool is completely engaged, you might have to wiggle the fitting around until it comes free. Spray some PB Blaster if you need to.
In my experience, I had to rotate the accumulator after using the tool to expand the spring. As I rotated, I pulled the accumulator from the evaporator. I had the large hose disconnected from any retaining clips on the inner fender so it could move with the accumulator.
Get some Nylog 'snot' to put on the fittings - each fitting that uses the quick-connect. You will be pleased when you don't have any more leaks. It actually works. I used 'red' when I replace the accumulator, evaporator and high side line in my Mercury, and haven't added any R12 since.
