Need purchase help....

I am looking at buying a used F150 and was wondering if there were any years or models to stay away from? I am considering a 2001 F150 4x4 5.4L V8 with 83,000 miles or a 2003 F150 2wd 4.6L V8 with 71,000 miles. Both are in good condition.

Thanks!!

Nothing inordinately wrong with either of those years. The '03 may or may not have the improved thread heads.

Personally, I'd lean toward the 4x4 with the 5.4 liter. The 4.6 is underpowered for that size vehicle (IMHO).

I'd go with the 2 wd... unless you just gotta have a 4X4. less moving parts to replace

I second Avator. 4x4's are a PAIN to work on, more expensive, and a headache to diag. If ya don't need it, don't get it. Mish is half correct with the under power comment. My 98 4.6 has 215k on it and I've never even pulled the valve covers. I've had that truck since 65k. Take care of the oil changes, trans flush... you'll be fine. If you're just cruising, the 4.6 is more than adequate. The 5.4 does have more power but I do framing and carpentry and the 4.6 has never let me down with a 7k lb trailer behind it either.
