My next door neighbor has a 2001 with 60K miles on it and it too has the 4.6L. He bought his truck used but it does appear to be well maintained. It too is burning oil. What the heck is going on with these engines?
the motor is a tank. If you keep oil in it, it will run forever without opening it up.
The valve stems sometime go south with higher mileage 4.6's. Especially if its accompanied by a puff of smoke when you take off from a red light, its the valve stems.
Just keep the right amount of oil in it, and drive it forever if you don't want to fix the valve stems.
My 4.6 has burned oil from the day I bought it. Now with 125,000 on it and I'm running 20/50 oil to try and keep the oil in it. Kind of a pain to check the oil and add every 1,500 or 2,000. But no problems. And I continue to put the pedal to the metal when I need to.
my 96 t-bird has 115,000 miles. I use kendall gt-1 10/30.These records are from my log book. It used 3/4 qt in first 1500 miles after last oil change. Another 3/4 qt in the next 1,200. 3/4 in the next 900. 3/4 in the next 750. (Don't know how I always catch it at 3/4 qt!). I believe modern cars are meant to use a small amount of oil in the combustion process. My car does not smoke at start up or on the road. I don't think it's a big deal checking the oil once a week and adding every 3 to 4 weeks. Oil is cheap.
