Hi all, I have a 95 F150 auto trans 4x4 with a tired 4.9 litre.
I've bought a 94 F150 standard trans 2 wheel drive with low kms.
Planning to swap the engines around, the 94 has air in head and the 95 does not. Whats the best way around this? Change heads? Replumb?
Hmmm, Thanks for all responses in advance !!!
Take a closer look at the 95 head. You sure someone didn't install NPT pipe plugs in the air holes?
It's very difficult to remove that air tube assembly without damaging one of the fittings that threads into the head. So rather than replace a damaged air tube assembly most people just install pipe plugs.
An after market replacement air tube assembly runs around $85.00.
Are you saying there are no air holes in the 95 head or it's missing the air tube assembly? The air tube unbolts from the head.
If you have the vehicle (VIN) number the engine came from, the 8th position digit from the left should be a Y.
That would indicate the head had air holes in the head.
If it's not a Y 4.9l engine, it did not come from a F series truck.
Click on this link which shows what year 4.9 liter engines had air tubes in
the head.
Just to let you know when I rebuilt my 89 4.9l I just plugged the air holes with pipe plugs and left the air hose from the air pump disconnected. No codes set and I just passed Maryland emissions testing.
Hi again, the 8th digit is y and Ive had the truck since almost new so the engine is original to the truck.
It does not have an air tube nor is it drilled for one in the head.
The 94 engine has the tube.
