I'm going to replace the gas tank on my '74 F-100 S.B.How much is involved in the replacement? Is this a simple job or is there more to it than I want to tackle on my own?
Thanks for the help guy's
This is a rear mounted tank and I'm going to replace the filler and vent hoses while I'm at it.
I think the easiest is to take the bed off. Then you can clean and paint the top of the frame and it's much easier to set the tank in and get it hooked up.
You will need new webbing between the tank and the straps. There is a fabric web to keep the straps from rubbing the tank. I used an old pair of seat belts and spray glued them to the straps. They are the correct width and long lasting.
Getting the nuts to come loose from the bolts holding the bed can be a challenge. You need to soak them several times and use an impact with wobble joint and extension because a couple of them are at a slight angle. If any of them spin in the hole you will have to cut the bolt heads off with a 4" grinder. (not as hard as it sounds)
The job is not too bad. Make sure you have a replacement filler tube before you throw the old one out. The actual hose is crushed to fit between the frame and the bed. I don't know if they are available anywhere.
woah unless you have a show truck and this is a rebuild I wouldn't bother with the bed, thats a lot of work
I am a "experienced handy man" and am good with tools and mechanical stuff, have no formal or automotive fix it experience (to speak of) and it toook me 1 hour to pull the tank out and about 1 hour to put it back in alone. I did empty it first.
X2 but it depends on where the pickup is from and how rusty the bolts are as to how long it takes to drop the tank. If it is from around here an hour easy, and empty I doubt it weighs over 20 pounds.

It's relatively simple. I had to drop a tank on a 76 to change out the sender. Drain the tank as much as you can cuz you'll end up with a wobbly goblin on your knees.
Since you're outta Martinsville (where it snows) I'd paint the new tank before installing it. On my 68 Mustang, I used Rustoleum Cold Galvanizing Primer to provide added protection than bare galvanized metal.
Thank you everyone for the help. The only reason I want to replace the tank is when I put over a half of a tank of gas in it and go around a right hand turn(not fast), the gas is coming from around the gas cap and it's getting on the bed.I've bought differant gas caps to try to get it to stop but to no avail.I even ran some small plastic tubing in the vent tube to make sure it was clear and when I get to the end of the vent going into the tank it hit's something solid.I thought the vent tube was a straight shot all the way into the tank.I'm thinking it's not venting.I don't know.I want to get it fixed before I have it painted.Man it's getting to be a real pain.
Yes,we had I share of snow this year here in Martinsville.I keep the truck in my garage and only had it out a few times since November.I crank it every week just to here it rumble. Thanks again guy's for your help.

I believe there is a flat plate on the bottom of the vent tube so fuel doesn't come out of the tube, only fumes.
You could always drop the tank and clean it out and see if that clears out any blockage.
I just bought a new tank for my 77 F100. Best price I found was at www.internetautopart.com for $75. UPS just came and it looks great. Made in Canada w/ 3 year warrenty. Just passing it on for what it's worth.
