More Fuel Milage?

Just curious here.

I have a '94 with a 7.3 IDI, I'm wondering what everyone has done to get better fuel milage out or thier rigs, and what kind of milage you get right now.

ATM, I've removed the muffler, and put in a K&N air filter.

I plan on putting on an ATS turbo system as well.

anything that helps move air in and out will help. The greatest determining factor is how heavy your right foot is.

K&N's do breath better then stock but they let particles by and into your engine. It's a trade off that's not worth it to some of us.

Can't say I've had problems with my K&N so far, but then again, its not very dusty in my neck of the woods. The inside of the air cleaner is always squeaky clean under the filter. Only time I ever found traces of dust was when the seal wasn't clamped down hard enough on the chamber assembly.

Turbocharging will help only in higher loading conditions. Cruising at higher speeds or towing at higher speeds will see the most difference. Running empty on flat ground at 55 MPH will probably see no improvement over stock. I suspect the K&N filter also has diminshing returns the less you load the engine.

there are way better fibre dry filters and i recommend you get one. I actually threw my k&n out because i couldnt bring myself to sell it to someone else. When i did all of that research a few months back, i shocked the crap out of myself. That and k&n's solid guarantee about voided warranty protection is absolute bull****!!! They wont honor it and Ford doesnt have to honor the warranty if you use one, not worth the tradeoff. **** always in the intake and you will see it, get in the compartment and shine a light down in the intake, you will see what i mean. It doesnt happen with the paper filters. I am looking at upgrading to the AEM soon and currently i have just a fram and i have yet to see the junk in the intake come back. Watch out man, it can bite you in the *** and i see no power difference or fuel economy increase. Getting rid of the T in the exhaust, chopping out the muffler, ensuring your IP is optimal and injectors are good to go will be more fuel economy than with anything esle! When i did my injectors i saw 55 more miles in my tank. Cant beat that and it shows how bad the old ones were!

Someone on here posted a comparison test on filters but I can't find it. I use Wix for oil, fuel, and air, have for years and never had a issue. The test showed the Wix air filters were rated good for flow and particulate stoppage and the oil filter was rated as excellent IIRC. The Chevron bulk plant in Anchorage is the distributor for Wix up here and the price is a lot less than off the shelf Fram filters at Wal Mart.

Yes, thats what I found on my V10.
Working hard I can get a full MPG more out of it, but I get the same empty or with a lighter load.

Very...

But yea everyone, thanks for the opinions

I -will- be using it as a transport truck, so pulling power/fuel economy is definately a factor for me. Getting paid by the mile with a fuel surcharge of $0.20 a mile has me looking for ways to improve things.

I'll be swapping out my injectors, because this truck was used on a farm and I just know they used off-road in it, but yea, giving the motor a once over and tuning it up will help lots.

I'll think I'll stick with the K&N however, I've never had an issue with them, and use em in everything I drive, one thing I always be sure to do is make sure it is oiled properly, I've never had dust or anything get by my filter. But in any case I do appreciate the comments.

keep an eye inside the intake manifold and watch the little black blobs begin to appear. When you pull the screen and wipe it out, you will see what i am talking about. the dry fiber element by AEM has kept it clean to date and there is just the usual thin film of oil, no blobs of gunk.

The ATS turbo, at least a 3" free flowing exhaust.

A little work to get more air into the ATS air cleaner also helps.

Set the timing.

A new IP and injectors may help a good bit if yours are in bad shape.

Run 80 PSI in your tires.

Skinny tires are better than wide tires.

Anything you can do to help with air flow around the truck.

Is your truck a two wheel drive?
Are the miles all going to be highway miles?
What speed are you wanting to run?
What transmission do you have?
Do you know what gears are in the axle?
What are you going to be pulling and how much weight?
Where are you going to be running?

With a bit more info, the answers can be a bit easier to come up with.

94 F250 with 7.3 IDI, 4wd
Yes, mostly highway
about, 60-65 MPH
E4OD I believe
4:10
Trailers ranging from 6K-15K pounds
Everywhere really (in the contential US), including Canada

For tires, I plan to run 265 75 R17 Dayton Timberline A/Ts (a light commercial truck tire with an E range, that will hold 80 PSI)
