I am putting a different axle under the front of my 76 f350, and of course I can't find one with the 4:10 gears like my rearend has. So I will have to change the gears in one of them. My question is, I wont be off roading or pulling extremely heavy loads, would I be better to keep the front as is and change the rear, or vise versa? The front axles I'm finding all have 3:55's (or around there). It will mostly be a daily driver, pulling occasional trailers. Just wondering what you guys have or what you would do
Right now it has 33's, but when those are shot I will probably go with 35's. it came with 33's that were almost new. It has a 460 so it will probably be a gas guzzler no matter what. I'm not too worried about mpg's.
With 35s and if its a 4speed I would lean to 4:10 to keep from slipping the clutch so much when pulling a trailer.
With an automatic you might be ok with 3:50s but rather have 3:75s
From 4:10 to 3:55 is a big jump.
Yea it's an automatic. I guess it will depend on what the front axle I find has. It seems like the ones I'm finding have either 3:55 or 3:75. I had a truck once that I put 4:10 in that had 3:55 and you ain't kiddin it was a big difference! It took a long time to get used to.
I concur with Bart, with 35's i'd try to keep the 4.10's, i wouldn't go any higher than 3.73's though, but personally i'd hold out for a 4.10 axle if it were my truck (you may have to look longer but they're out there) after all this is a F350 4x4 and you'll want to use it as a "working" truck on occasion so i'd go with the 4.10's.
Personally i would keep the 3.55's i have em in my truck with 33's and before the OD i still wanted taller gears. Now with 3.55's and OD im turnin 2k at 60ish. Once i get the 35's on it will be great. I have no issues towing or getting stuck between gears. Im considering 4.11's if i go to a 38" tire... depends on how the engine turns out when im done playin with it.
You may be running a bit higher rpm at highway speeds with the 33's, but I wouldnt say "redlining". I think the 4:10's would be your best bet for the 35's though. Just my opinion.
Its a 76 f350 Super camper special that I'm restoring and I did a 4wd conversion to it. It actually wasn't a bad job but I'm having a hell of a time finding a front axle. I know a dana 60 would be the best under it but I'm not spending $1000 on a front axle, so a 44 will do just fine for me.
