as promised, Big Ed gets power windows
hi guys, i finally got a chance to put the power windows into my truck. it turned out to be much easier than i expected. the hardest part was removing one of the regulators after i installed it and then found out it had a bad motor! the motors may turn but the drive gear has 3 nylon drive bumpers and they break up with age and use. i bought a piece of nylon dowel and made new bumpers but ford recomends replacing the drive gear with a new one. anyway, it all works smoothly and here are the pictures: http://www.superford.org/registry/ve...s18=&s19=&s20=

Thats pretty cool. 10 years ago when I first done mine I done it a little different then you did. I used the same Regulator and made the motor fit it and reversed the springs. It took a couple times to get it right But I have not had any trouble since and I have it done on 3 trucks. I also have Power locks and keyless entry on all of them. What switches did you use? I did not see a pic of switches.

Very nice!
I'm almost done with mine too, but you beat me... I also got the system from a '86 F150. But I think I'm doing it the harder way, cutting the motor mount off the '86 regulator and welding it to the '78 regulator. All has gone well, just need to mount it all in. Thanks for the close-up shot of the wiring to the door - just what I needed...

I've got a couple more questions, if you don't mind sharing.
What did you use for a power source? A relay energized by the ign switch? Constant power? Or tie into exhisting circuit? What value of fuse/breaker did you use? This is the part I still have to fumble through...
Thanks.

hawkrod lazy knuckle dragging neanderthal car guy, him need more power! LOL i used a ford power relay and ran a wire right through the firewall behind the instruments and mounted the relay on the engine side. i tapped into a key on power lead for the auxilary battery solenoid to activate the relay and ran my power lead to the terminal block on the firewall because that circuit has a nice big fuseable link on it already. hawkrod

The rear doors are NOT the same as the front doors. That being said the window mechanism MIGHT be the same, I don't know.
As to the nylon thing being broken in the first post, I watched a mechanic fix that with 2 part 15 min epoxy. Just took it apart and filled the nylon cup with epoxy and put it back together.

sorry, please don't be offended but you are wrong. that mechanic didn't fix the gear, he broke something else. those nylon bumpers are there to absorb shock and protect the mechanism when the stops are hit. gluing it together simply removes that safety feature and can cause quite a bit of damage. unfortunately when i was a ford mechanic i saw too many of those type of idiot repairs and they can cause everything from a stripped gear to broken glass or even a torn out window regulator. you would not believe how many dumb***** seem to think they are automotive engineers! the gear assembly was designed the way it is for a reason and the appropriate repair will save a ton of headaches. ford sells replacement gear assemblies very reasonably or you can buy the stock and do it yourself with some practice. don't try and redesign the wheel until you understand way and why it works (my father was fond of saying that!). hawkrod
