Regarding bank-fire injectors, that gas is not wasted--it remains suspended in the air in the intake manifold until the intake valve opens and lets it into the cylinder. It is not direct-injected into the cylinder on the exhaust stroke. In addition, the oxygen sensors (when working properly) sniff the exhaust to make sure that unburnt gas is at a minimum and tells the computer to adjust the pulse width of the injectors accordingly. It's not as good as sequential-fire systems, but it's not bad by any stretch of the imagination.

most of if not all the fuel in the cylinder should be burnt during combustion. But, the gas is still expanding and pushing the cylinder down when the next cylinder fires. Which wastes that remaining energy from the combustion. The amount of waste depends upon how much the combustion overlaps which is less on a 6 cylinder.
