Replacement hard drive

I've got a Dell 2400 -- around 6 years old. I'd like to replace the hard drive just to be safe -- plus it's a 30 gig ( how times have changed)

Does anybody have a suggestion for a reasonable choice? When I look around, there seem to be mostly SATA drives, and of course mine is older than that. (I don't keep up, but I think they call my type PATA these days).

Also, I would want to be able to just image my existing one -- I've heard that that's common, but i want to be sure. I have an external USB drive if some temporary storage is required.

Thanks,

Thanks,

They still sell PATA or IDE hard drives, but mostly online if you want any type of selection.. If they have them on stores, then they usually have 1 or 2 and usually large size like 250GB..

Seeing that it is an older PC I would recommend staying with a 160GB just in case the BIOS doesn't handle a larger drive.. IT should take a 160Gb one..

YOu can find 80Gb drives also, but you will probably pay more than a 160Gb drive..

Check out Newegg.com

Here is a link to the 160gb drives

Here is all the PATA drives..

The ONLY thing that I'd like to add to what Don posted, is. . . .

Go with the Seagate drive, or, if you can find one, a Maxtor!

I used to be a Western Digital hdd fan. I've had three (3) go bad, one right after the other.
(One hdd was less than a year old. It was my daughter's, and she came very close to losing some irreplaceable photos!)
I talked to a data retrieval guy, and he said that WD's quality is not what it used to be.

Also, I think that Seagate's warranty is the only one that's still for 3 years (or longer).
