Angry computer gurus... major hard drive problem

i have a western digital 45 gb hard drive that just crashed on me... it makes really bad noises when it's trying to read but it won't do anything. try to boot via cd and it says there's no hard drive present. is there any way that i can take this drive somewhere or send it to be repaired so i can just get the info off of it and put on a new drive or did i just loose everything with no hope of ever seeing it again? i'd appreciate any insight. i'm just so mad right now... i'm stuck using a 333mhz comp that was going to be thrown away. sorry for the rant...

go to pcworld.com, use their search box. try " hard drive crash" or "trouble shooting" or what ever you like. they may point you in the right direction.

I don't like to be the bearer of bad news, but 9 times out of 10, if your hard drive crashed, you've already lost your information. Check into it, maybe have a technician look at your computer. I can't really tell without being able to play with it whether it's your hard drive or the motherboard...but symptoms are very similar for both problems....but if your HD is making funny noises, I would bet on that being the culprit and get a new one.

Even if the heads truly "crashed", most of the data can be recovered. The question is how much are you willing to spend to get that data back. Data recovery from physically damaged disk platters is very expensive.

On the positive side, perhaps it was just the spindle motor that bombed out. This can be replaced, but again, the cost of recovery isn't real cheap.

Finally, the best (if there is a best?) scenario is that the drive controller attached to the disk has failed. These are relatively easy and cheap to replace as you don't have to go into the drive internals. If you can find another disk of the same make and model, you may be able to do the swap yourself. Just be real careful as the ribbon connectors from the controller to the disk chassis are fragile.

I recently had my computer at work crash. The computer was worthless but there were files on it that had value to me and I hadn't backed them up yet. I called around and found a computer repair facility in Kansas that I brought the hard drive to. They repaired it for about $40-$60 and also added a memory stick for free while they had it. (I bought the memory and they put it in for free). Anyway, I was able to get all my files back and needless to say I backed them up as soon as I reconnected the hard drive. I would take it to a repair facility, they will tell you if they can help, also, ask them what they charge. Good luck!!
