The HD on my notebook is about to bite the dust, it's got all the classic symptoms. I haven't cracked open a notebook, or a PC since like 1999 so I'm lost on the 'new' technology.
The current HD is of the Ultra-ATA/100 variety. I'm finding replacement 2.5" Ultra-ATA's to be few, far-between, and friggin expensive!
If I've got ATA/100, then ATA/33 and ATA/6 should be backwards compatible, right?
Also, with the new HD, I want to completely ghost the current failing HD to it. Can this be done with just the new drive in an enclosure? In other words, can I just hook up the new HD in an enclosure, plug it in via USB (or serial, or parallel??), and copy the old HD to the new one? Any good software to use?
Any help would be appreciated, because if this HD goes, I'm FUBARED cause I didn't back up anything!

That is the benefit of buying a laptop.. They are more expensive to fix.
Compusa has hd's for around $70.00 I believe..

Can you still boot to the old drive? If you can't then Ghost will not work properly. You will end up with junk.
If you can then create an image as soon as possible..
If the drive is dead already then you will probably be able to connect it with an enclosure then copy files off..
Try running Chkdsk on the drive if it usable. This may be able to recover some damaged data enough for you to get it off..
Heh, actually, I'm still using the old drive as we speak!
It crashed right as I hit "Post Quick Reply", and it took WinXP 3 reboots to get everything working again.
Ok, so looks like I'm heading down to the computer shop to pick me up a new HD ASAP.
Any software recommendations, or how-to's on how to completely copy the current HD to the new one?
Oh, a thanks a ton guys!
If it is working and you have ghost then create an image to cd or dvd. then when you get the new drive just install the image after booting to the ghost cd.
Maxtor has a program that ships with their drives called maxblast. This works if the old drive is a slave and the new one a master. I don't think it works if you connect one via usb.
If you suspect the windoze installation is at all corrupt on the old drive, do a fresh install (or use the recovery CDs that came with the laptop) to the new drive, then just recover the important stuff (mail, photos, work) from the old drive. What with fragmentation, spyware, old junk in the registry, starting with a fresh install makes a lot of sense.
No dice, somehow, between getting married and moving, I've lost all the recovery CD's that came with this laptop. Hell I woulda done that five times over already!
Talked to a local shop today, and they'll scan, fix, and clone my current drive for $60. Sounds damn good to me considering I'll probably screw something up in the process!
