ok on the new hard drive there is a clip i need to put in to choose whether it is single, dual ( master ) or a dual (slave) hard drive.

then on the connecting wire for the original hard drive, and the new hard drive, there is a clip in the middle where i can plug in another connector like as if i am using 2 hard drives ( dual )

so if i have to use both of them, which connector do i plug into the motherboard and then do i join the 2 connectors together?

If your computer has one hard drive now, you can have two. I assume your hard drive came with an extra IDE cable in the event that you need it. If you have two hard drives now, you might just need to get a card to run hard drive #3.

You want to run two HD's, until you get the info transferred from one to the other. Make one of them the slave drive.

You will want to add the new hard drive as a slave to the existing drive. That way you don't have to reinstall windows and all your programs.

COWBOYBILLY and everyone else-

i seem to have gotten the new hard drive installed properly, and my computer is running a little bit quicker. only problem is that im still having a hard time getting aol changed back to 8.0 or higher, this aol 5.0 is just miserable. is it possible that i need to completly un-install AOL and reinstall it?

also i bought a ultra ATA card that is suppose to be made to adjust a computer to use more ram space but i havent opened it yet. it was 40 bucks, should i install it just for the heck of it, or just take it back for my money?

I'd add the other one, keeping both
They have pretty well explained how to do it above.
I dont know about the ram space thing
But I have had to install a controller to hold bigger hard drives and more of them once

Good to hear the new drive is up and running. I assume you made it a slave drive and will most likely use it for data storage.

I really can't help ya with the AOL; I'm not a supporter of them in the least but I realize that some folks love em. My guess (note guess) is that you should be able to delete your current version and install whatever you want so long as it's still supported. But this brings up one of my many AOL peevs; after you uninstall it STILL leaves crap behind; maybe there are some exceptions but that's what I've seen. If this will cause problems for you I have no idea; I would call them for support.

As for the ATA card, I'd take it back provided that your computer recognizes ALL of the space on the new HD. For example, I know that Win XP will only recognize up to 137GB unless you take certain measures (such as SP 1). I think W98/W ME only recognizes 32GB unless you take certain actions to address this; one action would be to install that ATA card. Just do your homework on this one to ensure that there will be no data loss down the road.
