Hello folks. I have a friend that recently came across a '95 extended cab, 4x4, f250 real cheap. I looked at it and the turbo is locked up. The guy he got it from limped it home with a blown turbo and parked it about two years ago. What all should I look for on it? What should it be worth? Its got a auto tranny also. The compressor wheel is missing a couple small pieces out of it and I know they had to go somewhere. Any suggestions? Thanks.
I don't Lee. Everything is worth someting. It is hard to tell what all is wrong with it. The turbo is bad but what caused it? It is missing parts so it must have been a loss to someone. I most likely has underlying problems too. Depending on the miles and the shape it may be worth a "parts truck". I would have real reservations buying it thinking it is going to be on the road and being dependable for not much money. It is hard to know what you are getting. Again, everything is worth something. How much is real cheap? Do you have a pic?
The truck, body wise is in good shape. There's no bed on it right now. The PO said it was running fine when it lost power and started blowing black smoke. I was thinking if I get my hands on it, I'd put a blade on the front of it for pushing snow instead of using my '03. I'm not sure the guy would be willing to sale it to me just yet, though. Did these trucks ever have the same problem as the superdutys, where the air filter box was famous for not sealing properly if you won't careful? The wheel didn't look dusted but like I said it is missing some chunks.
My buddy just blew up a turbo in his 94 powerstroke. However hes running over 40lbs of boost. So i doubt thats the case here. It could be as simple as putting a rebuilt turbo on it. but then you never know what else could be wrong with it. The turbo might only be the beginning of a nightmare for you. So like Copedawg said, if its REALLY cheap, it might be worth thinking about. but tread lightly.
If its really cheap and there is a good long box I will trade you long boxes and some cash, if your just going to use it as a putput truck.
As for what its worth, something had to hit the wheel to take some fins off, if the fins are gone, where are they? Did they get int eh head and mess up some valves? Did it get into the combustion chamber and ding up some walls? This could be a project, more then you want it to be.
I thought he said the bed wasn't on it... Anyways thats not the point. Plus if the turbo seized up, it had a lack of oil, why was there a lack of oil to the turbo? Putting a new turbo on may just end up burning up a second turbo.
When we pulled the air box off the other night to look at it, the wheel was all messed up and it was a lot of oil in the hose. Me and a buddy just road by to take a quick look at it. Hadnt tore into it any farther than just looking at the wheel. Maybe this weekend we'll get back to take another look. But yeah, thats my thinking is that the pieces from the wheel had to go somewhere. I'm going to try to help the guy fix it but dont think its something I want to sink any money in right now. Thanks guys.
