The wife and i are looking at buying another used vehicle. After eight years of gm pain and misery, it's time to look elsewhere. So my question is, i see so many f-150's with around 200,000 miles. Would this be trouble free, or lots of money to keep running like my pontiac montana? I will forever be a fan of the ranger, but i need to fit five people year round and maybe a sixth here and there. If anyone has a good opinion about an f-150 being my family truck i would appreciate it. I want to avoid a payment that is why i'm asking about mileage. With spending around six to seven thousand the truck will have a few mile already. Thanks
Mine has been great. I bought it at 50000 mi. It's only had a couple problems it shouldn't have-lower ball joints at 55000 and a couple coils at about 60000. Other than that it's been outstanding. It's a 2001 and I've now got 93000. I'm still running the original brakes, shocks, and even the original battery! 9 years on a battery is pretty good. They are very reliable. There's a reason they have been the number 1 seller for 33 years straight!
Thanks for reply 1Fordnatic. My 1993 ranger only has 105000 and runs great. I'm really thinking about a truck for my family (car) and the f-150 seams to have alot of miles in them. I'm glad to here that yours truck in doing so well for you. My pontiac van has really killed the pocket book and gm won't get me again. I'ts time to start looking. Thanks again.
my 97 has 258k on it. my old 93 had 305k on it. if you keep it maintained then it will last forever. i will have a ford f150 as my daily driver for the rest of my life.
F-150 is sounding better and better. That many miles shows the truck will run a long time. Have you had to put alot of parts into your truck or just regular every so often parts. Thanks
Regardless of make anytime you buy a used vehicle it's a gamble, maintenance is the key. If the previous owner can show or better yet give you the receipts for any repairs made including maintenance it's a plus. For the number of people you want to carry a Crew Cab 5.4L sounds great, they're very reliable. Good luck on your purchase.
Be picky, CAREFUL and you can do well.
I get my used trucks at 90,000 miles or more, and so far my 2000 F150 (4.2, manual trans because clutches are cheaper than an auto trans replacement!) has only needed upper ball joints, front rotors, shifter bushings (V6F150.com has excellent instructions for this easy job) and an alternator.
I've seen many of these trucks do over 300K miles.

everythings stock on the 97, but it needs a PS pump. the 93 everything was stock except for the clutch and the alternator. clutch went out trying to pull a truck off the side of the road and the alternator went at 303k.
My wife found a 1997 f-150 4x4 117000 The dealership wants $7900 dollars. I will go look tomorrow. Wife says it looks very nice black with a tan interior. This will be my first look at a F-150 so do you guy think the price is with in range. I do think if we found a manual shift i could get the wife in it, and maybe that will save me some money. Also she might get tired of truck sooner and i get an upgrade from the old ranger. Thanks for replys i will let you know how the truck looks.
I'd say that price seams a little high, but dealers are always very negotiable. My 97 with the 4.6 has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. It has 169K on it with original engine, trans, water pump, alternator, ps pump and so on. I have never had to replace any sensor, and the only reason the diffs aren't original is I put 4.10 gears to compinsate for my 33" tires. I have had to replace ball joints and front cv axles due to the torsion bar crank and do regular maintance but I trust this truck over my wifes 02 4.6L mountaineer with 89K miles any day.

Sticks are very rare behind (Late Model) V8 F150's. I don't think I've ever seen one. I really wanted one when I bought mine, but I was told that 150's were only available with a stick if they were V6 powered.

Sounds similar to mine, that truck should be less than $6000 (IMO). Make sure you check the inside door bottoms for rust. Have ball joints been done? Plugs?
Test drove truck runs very good and 4x4 works. They told me they would'nt budge on price because they had to much into it and they could'nt fix anything. So i left and about 1/2 hour later he call and they made a mistake and i can have for $6500 out the door. The truck needs new exhaust from cats back and front stabalizer bushing and the brakes seamed a little weak you to me. One thing i was told is check engine light is on because of the cold air intake that was added and computer wont recognize it. 97 4.6 flareside exteded 4x4 with hard cover on box. What do you guys think, run away or haggle on price more. Thanks
