changing oil

I have just changed the oil on my 2010 4.6...first oil change...I purchased a filter from the dealer...when I changed my oil I started to compare the filters..the one from the dealer and the one off the new motor..
just wondering why there is so much of a differance between the 2...
The original has much larger porting, the original has no idetification on it what so ever, its even made a little different when you look inside..

The filter from the dealer and other part stores are identical, so now I am very curious as to why the big differance...

any ideas..

hopefully a tech out there will know.

I also posted in the 4.6 engine forum...

I know the recommended interval on these new trucks is 7,500 miles, but when should the first oil change occur? I am not comfortable waiting until 7,500 miles to get all those "break in shavings" out of the motor. I know it's not like the old motors as far as break in (500, 1000, 3000 and every 3000 thereafter) but what is a realistic timeframe for the first oil change?

7,500 miles is the best.

But, I now wonder what is the best oil to use?

the factory filter is manufactured from a different company than the Motorcraft in the parts stores.

Not positive but I think the factory filter is from Champion labs?

The Motorcraft is made by Purolator.

i wonder where i can get the one from champion labs?? i'll have to do some looking...

as far as the oil change interval i'm going to go with every 5000 miles...i really don't care what any ford manual or any oil change percentage meter says...
i have and will always go by what the oil smells like, feels like...
and how i have driven since the last oil change...

probably about the best way to go is to have an oil analysis 3500 miles after an oil change and let them tell you what the oils life expectation is..
(notice the first 4 letters of the word analysis)

i guess that just pulled the can opener out of the drawer on that..lol

i have used motorcraft semi/syn oil for a number of years and its been good to me on a lot of different vehicles..

shotgunz,,did you send me a p.m.??

99 is right on the OEM mfger - Champion Laboratories. I just don't understand why the service oil filter would be mfger'ed by somebody else other than cost or lengthy contracts?

I believe that it's probably a good thing for Ford to have two sources of oil filters; so long as both meet Ford's specs they will work equally well. Filters are interchangeable. What confuses me more is why there were 2 versions of the 4.6 V8, for instance, with significant diffs between the Windsor and Romeo...

If you really want a Champion, just go buy one of the brands that is made by Champion (Bosch maybe? Mobil 1?), although I wonder if the Champion sourced filter still has the bypass valve on the bottom like the Purolator made Motorcraft.

Usually large companies have different sourcing for production and service/OE aftermarket, with distinct teams dedicated to either one. I agree, if minimum specifications are met, it shouldn't really matter. Sadly there are more brands than manufacturers out there. I'm of the opinion that for the duration of the warranty, we should stick to as close to OEM as possible or maybe even let the dealer perform oil changes at more frequent intervals. I agree with previous statements on changing the oil significantly more often than at 7500 mi - that is plain ridiculous on dino juice and borderline on synthetic.
