I went to the Dealer for my 6000 mile service and the tech filled my 4.6 with 7 quarts of oil and I mentioned to him that the Manual stated that the 4.6 required 6 quarts with a filter change included. He proceeded to tell me that the 4.6 took the 7 quarts according to the dealer Spec information. Anyone else had this experience, and I called a different dealer and they told me the same. GG
I have never heard of someone putting 7 quarts of oil in the 4.6. I personally will never put that much in mine. And for the matter have never put that much in. So I would watch the dipstick and make sure that nothing will get damaged or just drain some out. But I could be wrong too.
The dipstick is not accurate in alot of 4.6 trucks, the 6 quarts only brings it up to the bottom of the dipstick level.
If you put 7 in there and keep an eye on the dipstick, you will be forever adding oil becuase the engine burns the extra quart very quickly and you will think its burning oil but you just have too much oil in it.
As I am sure LXman knows the subject of how much oil to put in a 4.6 (or 5.4) is almost a constant on these forums.
Generally 6 quarts will reflect approx 1/2 between the add and full on the dipstick. The F150 4.6 comes from the factory with the oil on the dipstick at the 1/2 way mark. The manual says 6 quarts and most lube joints and dealers will put in 6 quarts. 6 1/2 quarts should take you to the full line. 7 quarts will generally take you over the full line and is not recommended.
I did have a Goodyear dealer charge me for 7 quarts and we went back and forth on the amount of oil that should be added. After much ado, they admitted they put in 6 1/2 quarts but charged me for 7 quarts.
Bottom line if you are above the add and below the full line, you should be fine.
I took mine ('04 F150 w/5.4) in for a 5,000 mile check. When I got home I checked the dip stick and it registered at the bottom of the hash mark. Called the Service dept. and the manager stuttered somewhat, couldn't give me an answer. So, I got the feeling that they had put in 6 quarts only (save a little money). So, I went and bought 2 quarts of 5W-20 Motorcraft oil and put about a half of a quart in, bringing the level to halfway between the low and high marks. It just made me feel better. I'm sure it would have been OK at the low mark, but............

Thanks for that Dave, the manual I have says the 5.4 should have 7 Quarts when the filter is replaced... the 4.6 uses 6 with the same service,... GG
