I have just changed the oil on my 2010 4.6...first oil change...I purchased a filter from the dealer...when I changed my oil I started to compare the filters..the one from the dealer and the one off the new motor..
just wondering why there is so much of a differance between the 2...
The original has much larger porting, the original has no idetification on it what so ever, its even made a little different when you look inside..
The filter from the dealer and other part stores are identical, so now I am very curious as to why the big differance...
The factory oil filters are not the same as the Motorcraft ones.
I'm with Murph on this, I would want to know what the difference is and why. I would also want to know why the dealer sold me a filter that was not the same as the one that came on my truck from the factory. I would want the same filter even if it cost a little bit more.
My suggestion is that Murph contact the service manager at the dealership about this and if his explaination was not satisfactory I would then contact Ford Engine Engineering and ask for an explaination. Get a response in writing so if any warrantee problems arise you are protected.

this is a response from the 2009 and newer forum
the factory filter is manufactured from a different company than the Motorcraft in the parts stores.
Not positive but I think the factory filter is from Champion labs?

The Motorcraft is made by Purolator.
When I worked a Holman and Moody we used the Wix HD or HP filters and all the engines we recieved from Ford either came with them or were changede out by the people checking the engines in. NAPA sells the Wix filter and it would be very interesting if you would compare your old one to a Wix. To my knowledge we (H-M) never had an engine failure related to a Wix filter.
