Gear ratio change.

If I wanted to change ratio to 4:10, or 4:30 where would you all buy the parts? How would I get the speedometer in sync with the change? Maybe I didn't type in the proper request, but the search didn't answer so well.
Best, CB

Not sure where you should buy the parts, but changing gear ratio won't change your speed measurement.

Changing tire size will, however change the speed reading for sure.

That's where I got mine.

And as Gunnerdog said, changing the gear ratio has nothing to do with the speedo. The tone gear for the VSS is exactly the same. Speedo calibration is done based on tire size.

What's this about gearing not affecting the speedo? How does it work, then? Changing the gearing should change how fast the transfer case is spinning at a particular speed, right?

The VSS is in the rear differential, not the transfer case. The pickup is on the axle, not the driveshaft. Changing the gear ratio does not change how fast the tires and the axles spin at any given speed. Thus the gear change doesn't change the speedo calibration at all.

I went from 3.73's to 4.30's on my truck. Speedo didn't change a bit. I had to reprogram the tire size in the ABS module to correct the speedo.

Hopefully that makes sense.

That idea made me thinking.
My F450 turns around 2500rpm at 65 mph and I can take the steepest Bay Area freeway grades on 6th gear with 10,000 lb on my bed.
That really screams for different differential ratio, but would it be cost efficient on old truck with over 200k on it?

Probably has 4.88 gears, most do. I wouldn't bother changing them at this point unless you like running 75+ on the freeway a lot.

I don't run 75 too often because of poor fuel economy and engine screaming close to red line.
Would the truck do it at 2000 rpm, I definitely would do it more often.
Shifting 4 times before reaching 25 mph gets annoying too.

I have 3.73s in my 10.5. Anyone know if the carrier changes between 3.73 and 4.30 or 4.56?

No carrier splits in the 10.5, they all use the same.

That would explain the wire going to the rear diff.. Would there be any programming to do such as shift points etc.? Best, CB
