Well, I had a WOT dyno lab I had to do for school, so I thought it would be fun to use my truck.
I can't say I'm overly impressed with the results, which were:
196HP and
232TQ peak with correction factors
HOWEVER, frankly I have no idea what the heck I'm doing on the dyno so I'm sure those numbers are way off from what they should be.
To those who have dyno'ed F150's before:
What HP@50 would you use for an 04 crew cab? I believe I used 19 HP, and for weight I used 6500LBS (Inertia weight or something like that?)
Also, what is a good speed window to have? I did like 4 pulls all in different windows, starting at 68-98MPH, then 70-98MPH, then 75-98MPH, and finally 77-98MPH. I turned the OD off, and I still had issues with it downshifting.
Is there a better gear to use? I would try and command it to stay in a gear with TC lock with a scan tool, but I need to use the OBD2 port for my RPM pickup.
Another thing, I cant stress how hard this is on your truck. When I was in the drivers seat topping 98MPH I was starting to worry it was going to go "bang". Any suggestions from the experts on the "proper" dyno procedure for these trucks.
with an Edge on Level III, you should be seeing about 230 (ish) RWHP. Custom tuning will get you more, but the Canned Tunes of the Edge can only do so much.
the motor is rated for 300/365 HP/TQ...but unfortunately the tranny and t-case eat about 100 HP/TQ. A 4x2 will only lose about 80-85 HP/TQ.
I have no idea on how to run a Dyno, but it sounds like your setup needs to be adjusted.
Yeah, Like I said I would take those numbers with a grain of salt. The problem i was having was getting the truck to stay in gear. So for part of they dyno pull I would have to keep it at part throttle so it wouldn't downshift on me. I was hoping to have some higher #'s, but if I was a professional at running the dyno I'm sure i'd be able to do better.
Our trucks are very tricky to dyno. Mine has a large number of dyno runs on it and it takes a good operator to get good numbers. I don't count myself as one of those but I've watched two masters at work. It's just about impossible to get low end torque numbers without getting in there with some special hardware and software to hold the trans in gear. While fumbling around on my own, I found that I needed to change the top speed and downshift speed on the Edge's custom program (lower the downshift speed in 2nd or 3rd. I also know that it's easier making 2nd gear pulls than 3rd gear. You get OK HP numbers but lousy torque numbers (at the high end of the rpm range). There is some mysterious torque limiting programming that can come in and pull power back at the most inopportune times, as I recently discovered.
Thanks Jim, that is interesting. I have read the back page of my edge owners manual and it has some information about dyno tuning this truck. That also states that 2nd is the best gear.
