In which case MOST people aren't running D60's front and rear and this is a perfect example of a front end (IFS) being much weaker than a rear (even though 10 bolts suck) And I do believe the OP has such a front axle. But now alpha's gonna tell us all how I'm wrong and IFS is in some BS way stronger than a straight axle rear.

I've seen that happen on a Chevy IFS, most likely, that little stub shaft that engages the front axle into 4x4 mode broke, causing the housingg to split at the same time. It is funny to watch that's for sure.

I imagine that would have something to do with it too. More than likely what grenades the case is the pinion deflecting away from the ring gear. It puts a bunch of pressure against the inboard case case half then... BANG!!! Parts go flying! I don't know if many of you have been into one of these diffs before, they don't have bearing caps like a standard design diff. The case halves bolted together are what actually holds the diff carrier and ring and pinion in place. The case holds the preload on the carrier bearings, all the pressure under load (forward and reverse) is put right on the two case halves essentially forcing them to separate. To add to that they're cast aluminum, makes for a real strong piece huh? I love arguing with Chevy guys about why their rail-dragging POS Z71s suck. It's really bad when you know more about their truck than they do, what can I say I've worked on enough of them! Ford TTB might not be the toughest animal out there, but I'd put it against a GM IFS anyday of the week.

I just checked my book "differentials" from Randy's Ring and Pinion. They give a reccomendation of max tire sixe for a long list of axles. for the 44 tube and IFS axle as 33" for small Ujoint, and 35" for large U-joint.

These guys rebuild them by the ton,

After reading the secton on the 44's just now, I understand why Ford got away from the things and spec'ed up the Dana 50 axle for the Superduties and why so many people change them out for Dana 60's in even their Jeeps. The 44's are really weak housings.

The Superduties should never have even had the Dana 50, either.

Well pulling someone out backwards (from the way they came in) is usually easier because they already have tracks that they can get out of. Going forwards drags them through stuff they havent been through yet, which sometimes causes all sorts of problems. Take this video for example, but there are soooooooo many things being done stupidly here, it just becomes funny. The really good part is about 2 minutes in
