I am putting in an Autometer trans temp gauge, Phantom series. Ordered the gauge and it come with the gauge head and a sending unit. No fittings, no adapters, nothing. I want this in the HOT side and as close to the trans as I can without being stupid and **** about it. The truck has had transmission issues and this is the 3rd transmission I have put in it. The driver hauls heavy loads and keeps cooking stuff. Just to see if it would work, I installed a T fitting at the radiator, on the OUT line, before it goes tot he external coolers. I towed a few loads today, and the gauge never got more than a needle width above 100. Given it was darn cold and driving into the wind, it should still be over 150 with what I was doing.
I cant seem to find any kind of T adapter nor could I easily notice a place to put the sending unit in the transmission.
There is a small plug in the driver's side of the trans, just above the pan. That's where the sensor screws in. It shouldn't require any adapters, and very little (if any) fluid will come out when you pull it. As long as it's cool.
Don't worry about it -- this comes up from time to time. In the winter, mine barely moves. Maybe a hair over 100F. I'm running the very large 6.0L cooler as well, so that's not surprising when it's 30F out there. Do you have a larger cooler?
Thats where I have mine. When its cold out it really takes time to come up on the gauge but thats about as accurate as you can get for temps from that port. IMO, unless requested, you should get all proper hardware to hook up your gauges when you buy, or I wouldn't.
every superduty that I have to do work on gets a 6637 filter, Shaeffers 9000 series oil and additional tranny coolers. I have been installing the square ones, about 8 or 10 inches square, I find them on excursions in the junk yards. Seems to really work nice and are easy to install, plenty of room. My 2000 F350 has one, in addition to the OEM coolers. Fully loaded with a high resistance load, I still run nice and cool. I use a BD monitor, sweet gauge, fantastic customer support and was straight forward to install. Uses the factory internal temp sensor, just tap into the wireharness.
