I have a 2003 f250 6.0l diesel. I was wondering as i cannot tell anywhere on the hub of the auto or manual hub setting. Which position is it for manual or auto. Clockwise is....counterclockwise is what? May be a stupid question. thanks
thanks...also sometimes when it spins, dont matter if it's in 4 wheel drive or not, the rear sorta hops. doesn't do it all the time. have any ideas what this could be?

Clockwise is lock, counter is auto or unlock. Forward on the pass side is OK but forward on the drivers side is auto or unlock, depends how you look at it. Just trying to clarify so you're not locked in on 1 side.

When what spins, rear tires? Can you be a little more specific?
sounds like axle wrap. as torque is applied to the axle the leaf springs twist, if a tire loses traction suddenly the twist in the spring is violently released. when the tires slip and grab multiple times you get the hop you're talking about. if you leave it stock the only cure is to back off the power. if you want to mod, then you can start with some better form of limited slip differential, or move up it ladder bars of some type
Thanks Nitrogen, i am in the process of ordering 16x10 mickey thompson classic locks wrapped with 295-75-16 interco ssm16's. With the bigger tires and wider rims, is this axle wrap gonna be more of a problem? I am pretty much on a budget now since being laid off for almost 3 months, the ladder bars will eliminate this if this is the problem? Like i said before, when the back tires spin, it will sometimes start to hop until i let off the pedal.

What are you doing holeshots? LOL I run 37's and never got my back tires hopping. Some type of ladder bar will help for sure with your axlewrap. Are you hard into it when you pull out? Maybe just ease into it until you get rolling. I once twisted my driveshaft in half doing a burnout in my 91 F250 w/ 33's on it. It hopped 2x and on the third hop it twisted the driveshaft in half like a beer can right in front of the rear u-joint. Young and dumb, had a few cans of liquid courage in me...
ladder bars are the permanent answer, but backing off the gas in the meantime will keep you from scattering parts. wheel hop will produce very high shock loading of the drivetrain, sooner or later somethings gonna give. could be driveshaft, or worse, differential. an that'll really kill the ol budget
ok i understand. now i noticed yesterday that the tires dont have to be spinning very fast and this will start. i'd say i start to spin in the snow, 1/4 pedal or so and it starts and i leave off it quits. now could this be a limited slip problem?
I happen to have a photo available, so I'll put it up for future reference. Notice I have marked the AUTO position with a felt tip pen, because the Ford labeling is impossible to read when dirty.
The Leftsie Loosey, Rightsie Tightsie thing is an easy way to remember as well. Just remember the CW/CCW rotation direction is the same on both sides of the truck.
