I would not reuse it. Remember that it has to seal the coolant passages that deadend there on the heads. If it leaks you have coolant in the intake and or staight into the cyclinder, not a good thing. They are only about $40 or so. Replace it and have peace of mind.
Thanks,it aint in my DNA to throw 60$ in the trash,Im really rethinking putting this thing back together. But of course Ill replace it.................Give her another try..............
Rick did you make sure it wasn't her cam bearings that spun all over the place?
from your description of metals and the way she was knocking when you had it running a little........oh boy.
you know, you could just re use the VP to try it out? you would just need to put a new one on before you get done is all.
just trying to help your wallet.i know you've got some sunk into her now and your hoping it wasnt wasted.but this way wont help make it better.
Im trying to make a a decision on whether or not to even keep it,Im on a fixed income so money is an issue but not the only issue,Im still learning a lot about diesel engines but I really think this one is gone.that knocking, clunking sound makes me think its got to be internal somewhere. If I could find another engine then I would have the problem of no equipment to put it in,I have a woodworking shop, not a truck working on shop! No concrete, just dirt.Every shop around here either dosent know anything about these trucks or will rape you on labor or wont touch anything that has been already worked on.Ill make a decision today,I at least have something to get around in,Its got to have brakes and I will have to put a bag on my head so no one sees me!!!
I for one wish you were closer, would love to help you out to at least find out what went wrong. After that, if the engine is dead, it would be interesting to tear it down and rebuild it, it's a nice truck, seems a shame for it to die an early death.....
I keep seeing the shape of the bodies etc on these southern trucks and wish I could get a couple of them up here.
If you were closer Id say bring it by my place we could swap out a motor in a day. I looked at a map and you are about 7 hours northwest of me. Im located just south of Daytona Beach.
Thanks for the feedback,I wish I was closer to! I made the decision,I had my boys push it behind the chicken house for now,I will keep it and start saving for a new rebuilt engine,There is a place in Pensacola called Car City diesel, they have a good reputation, and will sell me a rebuilt for 4300$ rebuild mine for 3400$ not counting install, seems high to me.Ive had it for 12 years and never had a major problem, thats why its hard to let go of.For now Ill put put in the little dod**,I just hope a IDI dont run over me,that would not be COOL as the kids say
Just curious did you determine where the metal came from.
If possible and I was going to buy a rebuilt one, I would try to get a 6.9. That way the possibility of it being sleeved would be remote.
yeah its likely worth it Rick.but thats more than i payed for my whole truck.
have you looked into that Tampa machinery auction down there in Florida?
they sell some really nice vehicles and go for great prices.
often stuff thats not whole.so you could find just an engine,or a beat up rig with a good one there.
im sure in Florida though, that truck of yours has very little rust and probably worth a decent rebuilt engine.still, you could probably buy a nice whole truck for that.thats going to be a tuff call there.
meanwhile,be sure to post up some pics so Star can see the metal and top of the engine.sure would be bad to toss a good engine.
Ill put up some pics tommorow afternoon,No,I never found out where it was coming from Star,The body is in very good shape, for a 86,up till last year the air and everything worked Ill keep my eyes and ears open maybe ill get lucky.I have never lost confidence in myself fixing anything but this one got me. lve learned alot from you guys, and will continue to read daily,[still want to see joe and his hammer trick] Im just a couple weeks out from puttin on my overalls and planting the first stage of the garden, ill be to busy with that and catching fish to can to work on trucks for a while!
I've reused mine in the past and knew of others that did. Provided there isn't any obvious damge I would not be worried about reusing it. Gently clean it off (can't use solvents on the soft surfaces), and use some RTV sealer on it (some, not a lot). The coolant passages only have to be blocked off at the source and there is only oily air normally going through the manifold.
If the truck was turbocharged I would be more concerned but I even did that.
