They are not onlyto prevent hot oil touching the manifold heating it up, the same oil can apparently cook off as it Touches the manifold where the exhaust gases cross over. This can make ash/carbon deposits which end up in the engine. Cork end gaskets are good and are more user friendly than the rubber ones
That is a very good question. Sorry When you mentioned gaskets I wrongly assumed you meant the end gaskets. I had an aftermarket alloy manifold and good gaskets that blocked off the exhaust ports on the heads so I didn't even use my brand new pan. I would sit it in the valley and see the what the clearance is as to wether or not its the pan to the heads or the gaskets. Unless there is a factory specified procedure some-one else out there knows about that is? If the pan is utilised with sealant do you even need the gaskets?
