A friend of mine has a 79 T-bird that is donating the 302/tranny to his 78 pickup. We need to know how we can identify what auto trans is in it. It is still in the car and we would like to know before we take it out. What are the identifying features of each tranny? If it is a C4, would it hold up okay in a 2wd F100?
The C6 has a one piece case--the converter housing is an intergal part of the transmission.
The C4 has a two piece case--the converter is sepaarate from the case. Either would work in the pickup. Hope this helps. ray
if the tranny has a removable bell housing it is a c4. if the bell housing isn't removable and is cast right in to the tranny body...its a c6. a c4 should be just fine in a truck if you have it rebuilt for high performance
I have scans of the bottom pans from the common automatic transmissions on my page to help you distinquish between these transmissions.
I hope this helps.
