So for our '54 we picked up a 292 motor to replace the old seized up 239. It came with an automatic transmission, which is not going to be used, but I am trying to figure out what it is to get rid of it. It looks like some version of the fordomatic based on pictures I can find online, but after google searching some of the markings, it may be some version of a borg warner tranny. I'm hoping someone here can help identify it.
The markings are:
on bellhousing
PMB7976A W2
on transmission (located directly on top of the main housing)
5C-1
WG DIV
N 10
I have pictures of all of the marking if anyone would like to see them, and I hope to get some pictures of the whole thing sometime tomorrow if that would help.
It should be mentioned that this would be cheap/free to a good home if I can identify it and figure out if it would be worth something to anyone. At the very least someone might want the bellhousing, as it looks like it comes apart.
I can't help with the numbers but if the pan has 11 bolts and perfectly square it's probably a C4. The C4 and the FMX both had a removable bell housing but the FMX is VERY heavy since the center housing is cast iron. It has a 13 bolt pan.
Discription is a perfect match for the bone stock ford-o-matic auto trans available in thos days. They had a removable beel housing, and 14 pan bolts. I am looking at the picture of one right now in the Ford Illustrated Parts Catalog.
On the drivers side of the transmission case, is a Ford ID tag code riveted on with codes similar to these examples: PAR-A, PAW-A.
Post what you find.
You cannot go by the transmission pan to ID what type of transmission it is, because....
It could be also be a Cruise-O-Matic.
The Cruise-O-Matic uses the exact same (2) transmission pans a 3 speedo Ford-O-Matic does.

The C4 was introduced in 1964, the FMX in 1969.
Some peeps here confuse the FMX with the two earlier FX & MX Cruiseomatics.
Not to barge in-But---is the t98 4speed from my 1956 F600 a lot different than a 4speed in a F100? In other words does the 53-60 something trans look like the bigger truck trans?
I have a 272 and 4 speed I just pulled out of the 56 f600---is the 4speed the same as what the 56f100 has? Thanks and sorry to barge in.........Bill

I barge in all the time, must be a trait of guys named Bill.
1956 T-98 = F100/700 same-o, same-o.
The same case was used 1953/56, prior to 1953, the case is different.
There may be internal differences 1953/56, I'd have to take a look-see.
Be back is an hour or so, the war department aka "She, who must be obeyed," wants to go to the pottery place, cuz they have a sale going on....(sigh).
Bill---Maybe the pottery place will have a nices ole effie sitting out front , and you can stare at it while--''she who must be obeyed'' shops......thanks Bill

There is a tag, but from what I can tell, if anything what written on it - it has long ago been rubbed off. I had assumed that tag would give me everything I need, but of course couldn't read it. I will take a closer look this afternoon and see if if I can possibly pick anything up on it - but I doubt it.
I am hoping to impose on Bill for some help identifying two transmissions. I'm researching what it takes to adapt an FMX to a y-block and I think one method is to use a Cruise-o-matic front pump and converter. I found two transmissions in a rural boneyard with prefixes C5AF and C5MP and had two questions;
Are these Cruise-o-matics? And, what might the differences be?

Thanks Bill.
You didn't provide suffixes for the prefixes you listed.
There are over a dozen C5AF's alone. C5AF = 1965 Galaxie or LTD.
If the C5AF trans has 13 pan bolt holes, it's an MX Cruise-O-Matic, used with 390 engines.
C5MP is from a 1965 full sized Merc, and it's an MX Cruise-O, because that's all the big Merc's used in 1965.
MX C-O-M: 1958/67.
Neither of these trannies is an FMX, because there were no FMX's till 1969.
Julie: We have over 100 pots...just for cacti. Some were bought at Homeless Depot, Lowes, some old timers were bought at yard sales and were made by Bauer, Catalina, Gladding-McBean, etc.
Another 50 or so pots are for other plants, and another 100 or so are Pueblo Pottery (not for plants!). Some of these date back to the 90's....the 1890's.
