i wanted to put a snorkle on mine cause my buddy was going to give me one, 5 inch alum pipe with a 6 inch square intake 
would have been gnarley but i diddnt want to chop the body and fenders all to hell

Is there any magic to the hypermax cowl type units as far as directing airflow?
Could I just get one of those hvac tin pieces at home depot and reshape it into a cone type shape until it turns into the round 4" end?

I am assuming they have done some researcha and it has those dimensions for a reason?
Does anybody have the dimensions of the mating surface to the firewall?

I dont think there is any magic calculation. There isn't a whole lot of usable space on the firewall as is. The hypermax box was a tight fit, there is still a little bit more space, but not much. I had thought of making my own box on the firewall, but I'm lazy and got a deal on my hypermax kit.
