My front fuel tank needs a new sending unit and the cheapest I have found is like $80 for a replacement. But I was looking and I found that autometer makes a universal sending unit. I dont know much about these things so can somebody look at the info on one of these and tell me if they would work. This would be a lot cheaper than a factory replacement so I would like to give one a try if you guys say it should work.
is there supposed to be a link there. One thing if you are just trying to get your fuel guage to work a lot of times you can remove it and clean it up good and she will work.
That link didn't come up. I will tell you that if I was your mechanic I would make sure the wireing and the guage was working and tell you the same thing. I wouldn't pull the tank and try to clean it up as I would have to stand behind it. You can do a lot of things and save yourself some bucks that a shop can't do for various reasons.
Sorry about the link.Just search it on google and click on the summit racing one. And fuel tanks arent my area of expertice so im not gonna mess with it.
This is my opinion on that unit.
It looks like a cheesy product for the hot rod crowd it fits a fuel cell or an ole incab tank with the screw on sending unit not nothing like yours. Another thing is it operates on a 240 to 33 ohm scale which is what there guages are and yours may or may not be. If I remember right ford used two different ohm ranges depending on the vehicle. If you are planning on a shop installing it for you anything beside an exact replacement will cost you more than a oem sending unit in labor and very few places will guarantee it unless they sell you the part. This is what the one you need looks like where it attaches to the tank. Another thing is they are very simple to do yourself if you want to save some bucks. We will be glad to walk you through it.
Okay and thank you starmilt. Im not very educated on fuel tanks which is why I was going to have a shop do it. But if you say its not very complicated then I guess I can give it a try! First off, it is the front tank so what would be easier, drop the front of pull the bed off? Step by step instructions would be nice.
what size are those hoses going to the fuel sending unit. I need to replace mine from there to the main front to the manual fuel pump. I'm just gonna use regular hose.
If you have the means to pull the bed it is real easy to replace the sending unit. there are some small orings that are usually fine but I would replace any way inside the plastic fitting that slips on the metal tubes on the sending unit. You can see the triangle tabs on the plastic fittings. I would think a new sending unit should come with new ones but lately I doubt it. any parts house has them and they are cheap, they just push into the ***** on the fitting to lock it in place. Just remove them and the electrical fitting and them with a hammer and a blunt punch tap the metal tabs you see sticking up counter clock wise until the lock ring that holds the sending unit down with the slots in the tank and then you can just lift the sending unit out.
If you pull the bed you don't even have to run the tank low.
How rusty is your rig underneath. If it is a rig that has always been around here it is uasually easy. but if the bolts are rusted bad it can be a pain.
