This is a terrible pic, but the only one I have with the stock intake. It's basically a thin slit of a tube attached to the core support.
My complaint is it doesn't make enough noise. If I turn my radio on the lowest volume setting, the intake noise is completely drowned out. DaveS has a pretty good ram air setup going through his grill. It works good for the 83-86 trucks, maybe the 87-91, but the 92+ trucks have a wider grill and cover the opening that he made on his truck. You would have to cut up the grill to take advantage of it.
Here is the hypermax kit for comparison. It works great, but is overpriced for a piece of plastic. I was lucky and got mine cheaper from a guy on OB who bought it and never used it.

here's the stock air duct at the hood:
the reason its placed there is because around the hood, its a high pressure area.
this is more important than just the amount of the air flow.
so when you place it down by the grill, its good.but its not really a high pressure area.
the cowl is however, and im thinking of running mine here like Sycostang67's setup.
another good place for high pressure is the wheel wells.but this probably is not such a good idea for trucks who go off road.im sure you would have to really keep an eye on the air filter,to keep it clean too.
im liking this cowl induction setup a lot Sycostang67.im gunna copy ya on this one!
