Can anyone tell me how to easily identify a rear axle? I don't know squat about them, and my brother tells me I have a Dana model. As someone suggested on a previous post, I went to the Dana website and tried to index the numbers on my data plate, but nothing came up. So, back to the question.... How can I easily and POSITIVELY identify my rear axle?
And again, for any gurus that may find this, here's my data from the plate.....
From the information provided you have a 3.07 to 1 gear ratio. One way to tell if you have a dana or something else is the way the differental is shaped. Ford rear ends are round when you look at them from the back. Dana rears are almost six sided. Youll know what I mean if you have them sitting side by side.
Don't get too excited, they rip you off on some stuff. In particular their heater cores are 40 dollars plus. I got mine at Advance Auto for 18 bucks with a lifetime warrenty.
If I am not mistaken, you previously posted that it is not a Ford unit. And it has a rear cover plate? The tag (D7__) indicates a 77 model by Ford's coding. Well, you asked for an easy and positive way to id it -- those maybe contrary terms. I would get a heavy duty cleaner/degreaser (Home Depot has Zep Industrial Purple stuff which, used straight, takes off grease plus paint) and clean up the axle. Try the right side first and get it down to the original paint (or less). Along the top half of the tube (one side or the other) you should find the Dana emblem plus additional numbers. Be thorough as these are only stampings and heavy paint can obscure them. When you are done, you will have a nice clean axle you can repaint (your choice of gloss as long as it is black) with pride. Good luck; let us know what you find.
