I really really hate these new style gas cans where the pour spout and vent are all in one. Has anyone modified these in anyway to make them better. I swear I spill more gas with this style than the old ones. In fact, I know I do. Plus you cant fill road vehicles with them either. Guess I will have to keep an eye out for the old style at auctions and craigslist.
No C/S/K stores here, all tractor supply stores (Tractor SUpply and others) have gone to these crappy cans. I believe its some kind of law that they have to sell these now. Because they were designed to "spill" less....yeah right. Plus the one I have for gas, the nozzel doesnt work right anymore after a year. I have 2 for diesel and they work okay, but would love to get rid of them as well.
One would have thought someone in the design department would have given this 'new style can' a try before mass producing, spoke to several merchants and apparently nobody likes them.
IMO, this can is slightly less of a pain in backside but still have to push a button while pressing the handle and in meantime try and direct the gas into the opening. http://www.acehardware.com/product/i...LAID=309546758
The new design is unbelievably poor. I had to help my buddy fill up his boat with one of these cans (actually 3 of them) and it was a nightmare. I have 3 of the "old" style motorcycle/atv gas cans (5gal) that I'll never part with.
I sent that link that 89CrewCab posted to my buddy. Looks like a good idea!
I was told the new style gas cans came into use because the old style vented too many hydrocarbons to the atmosphere. BS.
We have a few of the old style cans at our house, I pretty much try to treat them like gold nowadays!
Funny thing is, I've been driving a couple times and seen a gas can laying along the side of the road that blew out of somebody's vehicle, and thought to myself...wonder if that's an old style can?
Man I really hate those things too They make those PITA Safety Cans of yesterday look like a walk in the park! I have a new 5 gal can I bought to refuel the Jet Ski while on the water. The first time I used it, it leaked so much gas that I was standing in a huge puddle (gas floats on water ya know) -Hey no smoking! What crap... It's funny this new spout that was presumably required to prevent evaporation and spills has turned out to do any thing but that. This really smells of the low flow toilet issues of the 90's brought on by our friendly US Government; drop a duce and flush that puppy 4 or 5 times to clear it, oh yeah don't forget to keep a plunger nearby; ignorant! Anyway, I have resorted to using a trusty funnel when pouring gas nowadays. Chaosracing, rep points to you for letting me vent on this one!
Haven't bought a new can since they got rid of the little vent cap ... I would think a sheet metal screw would work just fine ...
Idea ... Oil pan drain plug ... or a petcock ...
Making a vent might help a tiny bit, but your still gonna spill a lot of gas. From the spout not closing properly to the gasket not seating right when you put the nozzel back on.
Like Bern_F150_4x4 said, this smells of the old low flow toliets that the feds made everybody start making before everything was properly tested.
Not trying to be opposite but the cans I bought at home depot a month or two ago actually are pretty cool - my hands are a bit messed up and tilting the can to pour then upright quickly to stop flow always resulted in spills for me. With the new cans, because of the sliding valve on the nozzle, I spill far less, if anything.
I haven't tried filling a vehicle though, just the riding mower, tiller, "toy-sized" snowblower, leaf blower, weed wacker, etc.
I have noticed I can't empty the can entirely, even when turning it upside down to "encourage" the gas to land on the backside of the nozzle... but I considered that a minor nusuance.

I've had my Flo 'N' Go gas pump for about 3 years and it works great!!! It works with any gas can and the spillage is reduced to about zilch!! It is the only way to go.

If understand correctly the siphon 'Flo N Go' requires the gas can has to be above the filler neck level; if so, not sure these old bones can lift a 5gal can above the fuel opening on the 65.
There is a bellows style pump built into the dispenser nozzle, sort of like the squeeze bulb on a boat gas tank. It'll pump or allow gas to freely flow, but you can sit there and squeeze it all day if needed. Not good if you have arthritis, though.
